My whole life, Curaçao has been my favourite island to go to. Visiting family, swimming all day every day, eating the best food and just chilling – it never gets boring. After spending a ton of time on the island – as a half tourist half as a local – I thought I’d make a list of some of my favourite things I like to do on the island and think you should do whilst you’re there.
1. Visit a couple of the many beaches
Curaçao has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and it would be a complete waste if you don’t try to visit most of them! My all time favourites are Cas Abao Beach, Karakter, Playa Kenepa, Playa Lagun, Piscadera Baai, Playa Porto Mari, Santa Cruz and for the more touristy places Mambo beach and Jan Thiel beach. Be ready for some clear blue waters!
2. Handelskade, Punda, Queen Emma Bridge & Otrobanda
The Handelskade is probably the most famous thing in Curaçao – and for good reason. No matter how many times I’ve been here, I always come back for the atmosphere, food, cute architecture and souvenir shopping. Walking around here just brings back so much memories!
3. Spend a day in a resort
For almost my whole life Santa Barbara beach was my favourite beach of all times. However, a couple of years ago people decided to build a resort and the beach wasn’t available for non-visitors – at least I thought. Because last year we went there and I found out that you can actually buy day tickets for resorts. Which means that you can spend a whole day there enjoying (almost) all the amenities! Who doesn’t want that?!
4. Go to Klein Curaçao
Klein Curaçao is a small island, two hours sailing away from Curaçao, that seriously has thé best beach! The water is crystal clear, the sand is super soft and the fish & turtles are the cutest. I would highly recommend taking a day trip to this island and get that tan!
5. Climb Mount Christoffel
Okay, I’ll admit, I’m not a hiking kind of person and I only did this one – but I absolutely loved it. It’s not a extreme hike at all (I’m just made for these things), but you will get a good workout ánd view at the same time!
6. Blue Room Cave
If you have the time and are a bit adventurous, definitely take a boat or kayak to blue room cave or walk there. It’s exactly what the name says: a cave bathed in blue light. Make sure to wear fins, swimming shoes and a snorkel, and take an underwater camera, because the underwater life is amazing!
7. Eat krioyo local food
Oh yes – Curaçao has some of the best food in the world. Maybe I’m biased because I grew up with this food, but I’m sure you will love it! Now I actually don’t have any good places I would recommend out of experience, because my aunt honestly makes the best food in the world and I prefer eating at her place lol. However, do make sure to get some Batidos, Red Snapper (or any other fish) & Funchi, and pastechi (my favourite!). Food trucks are amazing for local food!
8. Curaçao Sea Aquarium & Dolphin Academy – swim with dolphins!
As the name says, it’s an Sea Aquarium is an Aquarium. Here you can see a variety of fish and other sea creatures such as sea horses, sea lions, sharks, dolphins, flamingo’s and many more. You can even swim with dolphins at the Dolphin Academy – which is not cheap but totally worth it. If you love sea life, definitely go here!
9. Riffort Village
Now this place is a little bit touristy, since the cruise ships arrive nearby and this is the first thing that tourists disembarking from the cruises see. However, that does mean that there are a lot of activities and that the architecture is very pretty! I love spending nights here, listening to live music and drinking cocktails – good times.
10. Curaçao Ostrich Farm
If you want to feel like you’re in South Africa, then go to the Ostrich Farm. Here you can see, feed and eat – yes eat – ostrich. You can take one of the informative and fun quad or safari tours and see the animals up close! I would definitely recommend doing this if you have a few hours to kill and want to do something different – because you probably don’t see these animals every day!
And those are the 10 things you múst do if you’re going to Curaçao! Of course, there are many many many more things to do, these are just some of my favourites!
Have you been to Curaçao?
