During my trip to Gili Trawangan, I decided get my diving PADI by doing a 3 day open water course – oh boy, I was freaking freaking freaking nervous. However, after spending way too many days on the beach, drinking Bintang, dancing, eating ice cream and doing basically nothing it was about time I actually did something. To make a long story short – I took a leap into the big blue and got my PADI!
Before we could actually start the course we all had to complete a PADI Medical Statement. Unfortunately both my friend and I answered ‘yes’ on one of the questions in the form and therefore had to pay a visit to the doctor (I answered yes on the fact that I faint sometimes). Luckily our ‘problems’ – fainting and an ear infection – weren’t major at all and the doctor quickly decided we were ready to go!
In the following three days we learned everything about our equipment, how to save ourselves if anything would go wrong, dive techniques and the water. This was done through knowledge development sessions, pool dives and open water dives – and lemme tell you, I was absolutely no natural talent at the dives. With every thing we had to do, I was always the one who would have to do it 4 more times until I got it – but hey, eventually I got it. After practicing over and over again we all were allowed to go into the open water for the first time!
… And it was fucking terrifying. I wasn’t able to get my buoyancy right and my ears hurt way too much because of the change in pressure. But then, I saw a turtle, coral, Nemo and many more fishes and all was good again. And on the last dive? we saw sharks! My first reaction was: oh God, we better get out of here. But seeing both instructors just chilling and smiling made it so much fun to see them up close.
I absolutely loved seeing creatures that you’d never see whilst snorkeling or swimming. Super cliché, but it’s magical down there. If you love the water and animals, definitely get your PADI! I got mine at Blue Marlin Dive at Gili Trawangan, would highly recommend them!
